When someone calls me and says "I need a speaker," I ask the same three questions every time, before I say a word about what to rent. Not because I'm stalling, because the answer genuinely changes depending on what they tell me. Save yourself a call and think through these first.
1. How Many People, and Indoors or Outside?
This is the biggest factor by far. Under 100 guests indoors, one speaker usually does it. Outdoors, or over 100 guests, plan on two. Past 150 to 300 outdoors, you're looking at four speakers or a column array. Sound outdoors just disappears with nothing to bounce off, so the same headcount needs more coverage outside than in. 2. Is Anyone Talking, or Is It Just Music?
If it's purely background music, you don't need much, a single speaker with Bluetooth or AUX input covers most gatherings under 100 people just fine. But the moment there's a toast, a speech, an officiant, or an announcement, you need a microphone, and that means a speaker with a mic input at minimum, wireless if whoever's talking needs to move around. This is also the point where a plain Bluetooth speaker stops being enough, since most of them don't even have a mic input to begin with.

Get a Straight Answer3. Is It One Day, or Does It Run Into the Weekend?
This decides overnight versus weekend pricing, and it's worth getting right. Overnight is a 24-hour rental for a single-day event. Weekend runs Friday pickup to Monday morning, and per-day it's actually cheaper than overnight, roughly $24 a day instead of $40 on a standard speaker. If your event is Saturday only, overnight saves you money. If you want setup time Friday or your event bleeds into Sunday, weekend is the better deal.
Put It Together
Here's an example. Say it's a graduation party, 120 people, in a backyard, with one grandpa who insists on giving a speech, and it's a single Saturday. That's two speakers for outdoor coverage past 100 guests, one wireless mic for grandpa's speech, and overnight pricing since it's a one-day event. Total answer, thirty seconds, no back and forth.
